Shop preparations

Below is the process of turning a mandrel for my 6" diameter Scotch Brite wheel.  The adapters provided with my tool kit make for a fairly sloppy fit, and the wheel is eccentric.  I should be able to make an accurate mandrel with the aluminum stock provided to me by Randy Felten.  Thanks, Randy for the aluminum!  Maybe get it finished tonight.

Finished my mandrel for the Scotch Brite wheel.  It now rotates very smoothly and I feel a lot more secure with the solid mandrel.  I have not made many parts on my machine lathe, so don't look too closely.

I made the mandrel out of a solid piece of 1 3/8 aluminum stock, 7075, T651.  Solid stuff.

Turned the shaft to 5/8" and the arbor for the mandrel to 1".  The cap was the easy part.

Here I finally noticed that I have the wheel flipped and running the wrong direction on my drill press.  Will change that momentarily.  Woops.

Here we are chucked up, runs very nicely at a slow speed.

And below is the wheel in action!

This is my shop.  I am hoping 15x30 will suffice for a while.  Eventually I might have to commandeer some spousal territory in the garage.  But that's a battle I will put off as long as possible.
